CPD 412 Legal Issues in the Workplace
This class covered the laws that shape the worplace and how they play out in real life. We looked at employment law topics like discrimination, harassment, and disability rights, and practiced breaking down real legal cases step by step to understand what happened and why. It taught me how to think through a problem the way the law doesn't, while still keeping the human side of each case in view
Project: ADA Title I Research Paper
For this project, I wrote a research paper on Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the part of the law that protects workers with disabilities. I covered who the law protects, what employers are required to do, how to file a claim, and five real Supreme Court cases. I also shared my own view that the law looks strong on paper but often falls short becaue of weak enforcement, gaps in coverage, and recent rollbacks.
The biggest insight I got was that having a lw on the books isn't the same as having it enforced. My years of advocating for families made that real for me. To often, people have to fight for rights they already have. this paper pushed me to think about practical fixes, like having a fair, neutral point person to handle accommodation requess, so workers don't have to go it alone.
