Ecouraging Differences Through Communication

COMM 351

For this project, I built an ePortfolio presentation with recorded audio that looked at how organizations communicated about difference and inclusion.  I compared manager-level job listings and culture statements from three very different workplaces, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Microsoft, and Kaiser Permanente, and analyzed them using Brenda Allen's Difference Matters.  I looked at what each organization said it valued and whether the way it described its jobs actually matched that message.

The biggest insight I got from this project was that inclusion isn't just something a company says in its mission statement.  It shows up, or doesn't, in everyday communication, like how a job is described and who it seems to be written for.  As somone who has spent years advocating for families and working across different teams, it helped me see ho much the words leaders choose can open doors or quietly close them.  It was also my first real ePortfolio, which gave me a foundation I've used in other classes since.
